《伊索寓言》是源自古希腊的一系列寓言，相传由伊索创造，再由后人集结成书。也有人认为并无伊索其人，只是古人假托其名将一些民间故事结集成书。《伊索寓言》众所周知，对欧洲的寓言文学影响很大，拉封丹闻名的《寓言诗》即以《伊索寓言》为首要材料。
伊索（Aesop620--560B·C）在基督诞生前约600年，也就是2500多年前出世在希腊。伊索年少期是一个哑巴，只能宣告新鲜的声响，用手势表达他的意思；再加上他长的又矮又丑，邻居都认为他是个疯子。可是他的母亲非常爱他，常常讲故事给他听；他的舅舅恨这个又矮又丑的外甥，常常强逼他在田里做最艰苦的作业。
母亲去世后，伊索跟着曾照顾过他的老人，离家到各地去周游，因而学到了许多有关鸟类、昆虫和动物的故事。他们在一同过了许多年快活的日子。后来，伊索被牧羊人卖了，从此今后伊索就变成一个奴隶。有一天，伊索梦见了走运之神和气地向他浅笑，并把他的手指放进他的嘴里，放松他的舌头。醒来后，他以外地发现自个现已可以说话了。我们都喜爱伊索说故事，也都敬仰他过人的聪明。伊索早年靠机警救兄弟和主人的急难；凭机警避免敌人的损伤，清除奴隶的枷锁。传闻伊索因开罪特耳菲人而被栽赃致死。
伊索并没有写下他的寓言，他完全凭回想口授。全世界众所周知的《伊索寓言》是后人根据拜占庭僧侣普拉努德斯搜集的寓言以及接连发现的古希腊寓言传抄编订的。其间大多以动物为主：有的用豺狼、狮子等比方人世权贵，戳穿其严格、肆的一面；有的则总结我们的日子经历，教人处世原则。其方法简练精练，内容隽永浅显意义于粗浅生动的言语中，颇耐人寻味。
